Entitled to Your Own Language

I feel with the freedom of speech everyone is entitled to your own language, and speaking freely, wouldn’t you? Well of course you can say whatever you want, although there will be consequences. A student should know what is appropriate to use in certain situations. If you are writing an essay it is unnecessary to curse and use slang. There is a time and place for everything and a way to express your feelings.
There are also mixed feelings on professionals and rappers who were ridiculed for lyrics. Such as NWA in their song “F*** The Police.” I feel that they do have the right to say whatever they want, but that was the wrong way of doing it. All that did was start riots and a even bigger problem then there already was, they could have approached the situation in a better way. They were very popular and famous at the time and could have did it in a more respectable way, without starting an outrage.
“Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible because you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now
I'm tired of being the victim of shame
They're throwing me in a class with a bad name
I can't believe this is the land from which I came
You know I really do hate to say it
The government don't wanna see
But if Roosevelt was living
He wouldn't let this be, no, no”
They Don’t Care About Us by Michael Jackson, This is a better way of putting lyrics into a song I feel. It is not as Provactive and as violant as NWA’s “Fuck The Police.” This is two ways of getting a point across. The same point, but one in the more standard way and one simply not.

                                                            Identity- Public Vs. Private

The definition of identity is often confused or misinterpetated. My definition of identity is someone’s behavior, physical features, language, education, and ones public self vs there private self. A person’s identity is very unique, it describes who you are and what you are. Identity is used sometimes as even a first impression.

One part of the definition of identity I think is very important is one’s public self vs their private self. This means to me, a person presents themselves in two different ways. The first way being your public self. Which includes multiple things such as the way you talk/act in front of a professor, your parents, a coach, or maybe even a potential boss. Rather then your private self which would include the way you speak/act in front of and around your close friends or maybe a brother or sister. When I talk about someone’s private self it means that they act different because they are more comfortable around certain people. For example the “slang” one would use when talking to a close friend or brother/sister is going to be a hole lot different then if the same person would go into a job interview, or if they were talking to a professor. Your public self would be a lot more proper in the sense of you not being comfortable around people you may want to try and talk and act differently as to if you were hanging out with your friends is a backyard. You would not walk into class and say “ Yo professor. “

There are many other parts of the definition of identity but I think this one is very important. It goes to show you that someone’s identity may not always be the same. Identity is fluid, and always changing.

How To Tame A Wild Tongue

1. In the short story "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" by Gloria Anzadula, Anzadula is in the dentist chair refusing to get a cap. This is showing her not wanting to get rid of her heritage/background. Her tongue being stubborn signalizes and reflects on her being strong and stubborn about her beliefs.

2. Yes, it does make sense to me why Anzadula uses Spanish and English throughout her writing. Her purpose was to show people what it is like to have to understand a new language you are not accustomed to.

3. I feel Academic English can be defined as Spanish (standard) and Chicano Spanish cannot be described as standard. I feel this way because Chicano Spanish is not classified as a real language. although she feels it is,the language of the Spanish that live in a place where English is the main language.

4. I feel the necessity of speaking/writing in Academic english is to shape/show a person is well-rounded. There are certain times were you have to speak/write in a certain way as a requirement, but that also does not mean you lose your true language just because of that.

5. various types of English identities can be accents from you're hometown. You get use to "slang" that only the select few people from your community would know.

6. It is not that I use a different language speaking to my friends, but there are somethings that we would use like slang or what not that maybe others wouldn't understand.

7. The former English i would speak to my friends, family, and parents are all similar. Rather then if i would be speaking to a professor. I say this because i wouldn't use shortcuts and or "slang" when speaking in either a job interview or speaking with a professor just because there are certain times where you need to sound more educated and speak more proper.

8. " I am my language." I feel this connects to a persons identity because it shows a little part about you, or your true self. Your language is something that cannot be taken from you.

9. I feel the introduction and conclusion connect because although she is being stubborn she also wants to live freely in the English world. She feels your language is very strong and unique. Also she feels it is something that should never be abandoned.

10. Yes the language you speak can be a part of your identity. I feel this way because it shows a background, it can tell a story of where you grew up and your homeland.

11. Identity is very important to me. Anzaldua believes it is important to have identity, She feels her language is apart of her and it is something that will never leave her. "He claimed that i was suppose to teach American and English literature. At the risk of being fired, I swore my students to secrecy and slipped in Chicano short stories, poems, and a play." This goes to show how strong she feels about her identity.
